Mission

Our mission is to build community and coalition through education, awareness, and empowerment.

Vision

We believe, if given an opportunity to better understand the history of the Disability Rights and Independent Living movements, including the important legislative advances that have brought us to here, and given the proper tools and guidance to continue moving important disability-related legislation forward, people living with disabilities and their allies across the country can coalesce into a large, connected, well-informed voting bloc, one powerful enough to create positive change. To meet this vision, the 2024 Caravan for Disability Freedom and Justice hopes to interact with thousands of people across the country through its traveling roadshow, online Zoom gatherings, and supporting website from April to October 2024. While celebrating local disability rights movements, part of the Disability Caravan’s ultimate goal at each stop along the way will be to educate our peers on our history, and encourage them to be a part of their future by way of emphasizing voters’ registration for all. Presenters and local activists, will also inform listeners of the current state and federal issues facing people with disabilities. A QR code printed on the van and on handouts will encourage people to explore the website where they will find expanded content, including success stories, history, tools for voter registration and supporting legislative efforts. There will also be links to other efforts around the country all working to move the disability platform forward. The goal is to make it easy for people to become informed, get connected, get involved, and ready to vote in November.

Values

We recognize, value, and honor:

  • The Intersectionality and overlap of shared experience and struggle between disability groups and movements and other marginalized groups and movements. Oppression is oppression, and it must end for everyone
  • The importance of connectivity – of creating space and opportunity for the sharing of story, history, issues and concerns, and tools for creating positive change;
  • The power and possibility of youth – their energy, their passion, and their voice. Given historical context, awareness of current issues and concerns, encouragement and a roadmap for addressing them, and the tools to make a difference, today’s youth can and will change the world
